You've possibly arrived here checking the date for Mothers Day in the USA for 2018. After that you're going to need some gift ideas, because 10 years or more of gift giving to the same person for the same ocassion can't half stretch the old creativity muscles that's for sure.

Mothers Day in the USA in 2018 is on Sunday 13th May, and so if you're reading this on the day I wrote it, you've got just under a month to think up a fabulous idea (we will help you with Mothers Day gift ideas a bit further below) and you even have time to order it from just about anywhere in the world, including ourselves in good old Blighty (England).

What is Mothers Day and how and when did it start? 

Mothers Day is an annual celebration of motherhood and the mother of a family, and though it's date will differ across the globe, typically it's held in Spring. I guess something to do with all those spring births in the animal kingdom. In other parts of the world such as Russia, they instead celebrate International Women's Day, which is similar.

For the USA the modern day celebration of Mothers Day began in the early 20th century and thus it's a relatively new phenomenon first charted at around 1908 after Anna Jarvis held a 1905 memorial for her mother and then began a campaign to make 'Mothers Day' a recognised holiday in the USA.

I feel that one big key to getting gift giving right, and indeed coming up with good gift ideas is to identify what sort of person you have on your hands and what their hobbies and leanings are.

Once you've got that in mind it makes a search for gifts much easier as you are then able to be more specific about what sort of gift you're looking for. We all know that simply Googling 'gifts for mum' or 'mothers day gifts' just brings up a mass of broad results, much of which just aren't right for her. You could be there for weeks searching with such broad search terms.

What kinda mum (or mom as those in the US often say) do you have? Here are some ideas that will hopefully narrow down your gift search to something more specific;

1. Sporty mom

Think of who her favourite teams are, what her sporty hobbies are. Consider if she likes to go and watch sports or if she's into playing sports. Then you narrow this thought train down to sportswear, sports tickets, sports memorabilia, sports fashion ... you get the drift.

2. Rockabilly mom

Rockabilly style has become insanely popular over the last ten years with events, fashion, gifts and more popping up all over the world. Do you have a rockabilly mom? If so it's going to be easy to find her something along this theme, simply Google things like rockabilly gifts, rockabilly accessories, rockabilly jewellery.

3. Foodie Mom

With foodie mum it's all about cooking with fresh ingredients, growing her own herbs and vegetables, visiting food markets and festivals and dining out at restaurants. Foodie mom would probably appreciate a voucher for a restaurant, kitchen gifts, a herb plant (instead of other spring flowers that one traditionally gifts on Mothers Day), or a food basket / hamper of delights.

4. Glamorous Mom

Glamorous mom finds great enjoyment in having fantastic hair, nails and the latest fashion and jewellery, she's possibly partial to beauty salon and spa treatments too and so why not give her a Mothers Day gift she'll really appreciate. Consider giving your glam mom luxurious perfume, a spa break if you're feeling generous, vouchers for a beauty salon or a trip out to somewhere so special she'll have an excuse to get dressed up.

5. Hippy Mom

She's all about the animals, the environment and mother nature. This planet loving lady will probably appreciate anything related to nature, and so if you're considering beauty products make sure they're cruelty free and made from all natural ingredients. Other mothers day gift ideas could include pretty trinkets for her garden such as bee houses, bird boxes, wind chimes, solar lights and so on.

6. Arty Mom

The sort of mom that always seems to have an art project on the go; this week she's taken up painting, and she's still got pottery drying on the window ledge from her 'pottery stage'.

In this way she makes mothers day gift giving relatively easy because she has an endless thirst for new art projects and you have so many differenty arty themed gifts to choose from it's practically infinite. Google 'artist gifts' or 'craft gifts' if you dont' believe me.
