Get A Hobby, Get A Life

Get A Hobby, Get A Life

I can't be the only person to notice the abundance of human beings across Internetland who proclaim themselves to be regularly 'bored' (or ' board', for those illiterate amid them).

It wasn't that long ago, certainly last century, that mankind enjoyed a wide range of hobbies to wind away the after work hours; woodworking, golf, sewing, knitting, scrapbooking, gardening, photography, painting and more. Unfortunately following the advent of television and indeed in particular the Internet; mankind had become very lazy.

So used are we to having quick fire entertainment at our fingertips via the TV and the Internet, the thought of putting any effort into entertaining ourselves is unthinkable. Yet as the decades slide by and mankind slinks ever further into it's digital amusements an increasing number of us begin to realise that TV and Internet alone as a means of entertainment can feel somewhat unfulfilling.

I'm near certain that most people don't even realise why they feel unfulfilled, why they feel bored despite tapping away at their phone day and night engaged in endless conversations with Internet randoms interspered with the odd cat video.

To me it's obvious why these digital pastimes are so soul destroyingly unfulfilling; they're aimless, they produce nothing, and they achieve nothing.

The most fulfilled people on this planet achieve things, they have a purpose and they enjoy striving for their goals. With Internet and TV, there is no goal, there is no achievement, and hence both pursuits lack any sort of real emotional pay out.

So what are my hobbies? Obviously drawing has been a long standing hobby, as has been reading. I have other hobbies too, including gardening and I am currently cultivating quite the vegetable patch in my small surburban garden.

My longstanding love of literature is clear to see amid my product ranges, such as the products shown below. My love of drawing and creating became rampant over the years and needed a purposeful outlet, and so a few years ago Taylor Two gift shop was born as that outlet for my creative urges.

How To Get A Life

The solution to boredom is to find a hobby; a pursuit, a passion. A hobby that results in some sort of tangible achievement, and provides room for growth and development of your skills. This is where you will find deep and lasting entertainment - and boredom will struggle to take a hold on your daily life.

Choices

The choices are limitless, but some practicalities will restrict your options. These include budget, time and distance from any required space or equipment that cannot be brought into the home.  You will need to be practical and make peace with a balance between what you really want to do, and what is realistically achievable.

Bear in mind that with all new things, practice and development will be required; don't give up just because it's difficult for a time. The reason hobbies are important to prevent boredom is that they offer you a challenge, and this challenge is the very thing that will prevent boredom, as it's human nature to intrisically enjoy overcoming hurdles.
